Former Sheffield United youngster explains why he signed for Everton

Former Sheffield United youngster Dominic Calvert-Lewin has told the Sheffield Telegraph that he signed for Everton because it was too good to turn down.

The 19-year-old forward had come through the famed Sheffield United academy after spending 10 years at the club and his ability soon got noticed by a few Premier League sides. And after some speculation, Calvert-Lewin left the Blades to join Everton in a move believed to be worth around £1.4m. It was a move that angered some Blades fans as they believed it was another instance of the club selling off their prized assets instead of holding onto them to help improve their first team.

And for Calvert-Lewin when he found out about the bid, he was very excited to make the move to Merseyside. He believed he wouldn’t get much first team football for United this season as new head coach Chris Wilder didn’t use him much when he was on loan at Northampton Town the previous season and so he might as well move to Everton, a team that has brought youngsters into their first team very well over the last few years.

He said: “It’s an opportunity I couldn’t turn down. Everton is a great football club as is Sheffield United.”

“Maybe I wasn’t that much in favour at United and getting the game time. Maybe sometimes you need a new opportunity. I was at Sheffield United a long time and often a change of scenery can do you good.”

“I’ve settled in well (at Everton), I’m really enjoying it and working with different people. It’s a slightly different style of football and everything is geared towards making me a better player. The same as it was at Bramall Lane.”

“Unsy (David Unsworth, former Sheffield United player) is my main coach but him and Jamie are helping me a lot. David has really helped me settle in because I’m living a few hours away from home.”
