Russell Slade admits Charlton Athletic aren’t where they need to be

Charlton Athletic head coach Russell Slade has admitted to London News Online that the team aren’t where they should be right now in terms of their performance.

Following their relegation from the Sky Bet Championship last season, the Addicks were hoping to return there at the first attempt but their most recent form has shown they should be looking towards the bottom of the Sky Bet League One table rather than the top. They are currently nine games without a win in all competitions and have lost three of their last four games at home. This was compounded last night when they lost to Sky Bet League Two side Crawley Town in the Checkatrade Trophy.

And Slade, who has come under considerable pressure due to this poor form in recent weeks, has admitted that he thought his team would be doing better at this stage of the season.

In the post-match press conference, he said: “As a team we’re not in the place we want to be – we’re not in a good place at the minute. I’m honest enough to realise that and see that. We’re aware what we need to do in the coming days before our next home game.”

“It is how we use it now [the break for the international matches] – we can’t waste a second. There is a lot of work to be done. We will do that next week to ensure we’re better for it and that we’re more productive. We need to deal with some of our issues in the final third.”

“The attitude to improve and get better – the work ethic – was there. What we don’t want is any confidence issues going into our game. We need to stay strong, mentally tough and dig very deep to establish a high level of consistency that we can do week in and week out.”
