Former Aston Villa manager expresses desire to return

Former Aston Villa head coach Tim Sherwood has told Talksport, with comments being reported by Football365, that he wants to return to the club following the sacking of Roberto Di Matteo.

Di Matteo had only been appointed as the head coach of Villa in the summer by new owner Dr. Tony Xia and was given the task of returning them to the Premier League. However a poor start has seen them win just once since the start of the season and he was sacked following their 2-0 loss to Preston North End.

Several names have come up since the sacking as to who will replace the Italian with Steve Bruce being the current favourite while Dean Smith and Steve Clarke have also been linked to the role. But now Sherwood, who has already managed Villa in the past, has said he wants to return to the role.

Sherwood had been appointed as the Villa head coach in the second half of the 2015/15 season and initially did well by saving them from relegation and guiding them to the FA Cup final. However a poor start to the next season saw them sacked early on and he hasn’t managed since.

He had complained about his relationship with previous owner Randy Lerner but with him gone, he’d be happy to return to the Villa park hot seat.

He said: “I don’t know these owners. I was there under a different regime,”

“The guy I was with wanted out so it was a really difficult situation for me.

“When you go into a club where someone wants to really pick it up and take it forward then it’s a great opportunity for any young manager.

“I’d be no different to anyone else (in being interested).”
