Bolton: former striker suffers kidney failure – transplant rejected

Ivan Klasnic is a German-born, Croatian striker with 41 international caps and 12 goals. Now the former Bolton striker finds himself fighting for his life, according to the Daily Mail, after a transplanted kidney was rejected by his body.

The now 36-year-old came up through the youth system of German side St Pauli, breaking into first team reckoning at the start of July 1997. He left Germany for FC Nantes and the French Ligue 1 in July 2008, before a loan move brought him to Bolton in September 2009.

Klasnic played 94 games over both spells with Bolton, scoring a total of 24 goals and providing 12 assists for the Trotters. The Lancastrians now play their football in Sky Bet League One after relegation from the Championship at the end of last season.

Initially Klasnic fell ill in 2006, receiving a kidney transplant from father. This transplant failed recently and Klasnic’s mother offered him one of her kidneys. However, the transplanted kidney was rejected by 36-year-old Klasnic’s body, this necessitating his recent dialysis treatment.

Klasnic now lies in a hospital bed three times a week waiting for a donor, the average waiting list for donations in Germany is seven years. Requires treatment three days a week.

Klasnic said that he is shielding the extent of his condition from his daughter Fabianna in order to protect her. Mentioning this, the Daily Mail quote the ex-Trotter frontman as saying: “She knows I am sick and often need to go to the hospital, but she does not know why. I do not want to scare her.”

Bolton Wanderers sent their “support and best wishes” to the striker via a statement on the club website.
