Birmingham City: Rowett pleased with opening 10 games

Speaking to the Birmingham Mail, Birmingham City manager Gary Rowett has declared himself happy with how his side has played in their opening ten Championship games of the season. However, the former Burton Albion boss insists that there is still plenty of room for improvement as well.

On Tuesday, his team twice came from behind to earn a home draw against Preston North End. After the match, Rowett hinted that he may have got his team selection wrong, saying that he wanted to be braver based on the fact they struggled against sides such as Preston last season.

Ten matches in and the Blues sit inside the play-off places, losing just once. Rowett believes that is a fair reflection as he only recalls one half where his team where truly second best,

“It’s important we keep building points. That’s what we have done this year when he haven’t played well in spells we have turned it round to at least not lose.

“To get to ten games and only lost one is good, apart from one poor second half, I can’t remember too many games where we have looked like we were even going to get beaten.”

Playing with five out-and-out attacking players from the start at St Andrews versus Simon Grayson’s men was a brave call in the eyes of Rowett and felt they didn’t do enough over the 90 minutes,

“Last year we struggled against these sorts of teams who make it hard for you to break them down, we needed a little bit more.

“We showed some bright bits but not enough. And when the ball did go in to Lukas (Jutkiewicz) we didn’t get any real intent to go and join in. A couple of times the wingers tried but not with enough desire to get into those positions.”
