Sheffield Wednesday: boss says players must have it in for him

A come from behind 2-1 victory saw Nottingham Forest defeated as Sheffield Wednesday overcame an early Forest goal to claim all three points at the death.

Forest opened the scoring thanks to Henri Lansbury’s 35th minute opener, assisted by Mustapha Carayol, but were eventually pegged back by Kieran Lee’s 68th minute equaliser.

Wednesday continued to push and their endeavour was rewarded when Lee scored his second of the game, netting in the 91st minute with striker Steven Fletcher providing the assist. In doing so, the Owls continued a trend of grabbing late points, much to the consternation of manager Carlos Carvalhal.

Firmly tongue-in-cheek, Carvalhal thinks his side have an ulterior motive in leaving it so late in games – they are trying to ‘do him in’. Speaking to the ‘Football Heaven’ programme, Carvalhal said of his players’ dastardly plans: “I talk with my players that if the plan is [to] kill me, it’s very near. So maybe the next one I’ll die on the pitch, maybe.”

Wednesday’s next game is on Tuesday when Carvalhal takes his plotting players to Ewood Park in a game that pits the 11th placed Sheffield Wednesday against 20th placed Blackburn Rovers, a side with their tails up after two consecutive victories have dragged them out of the mire of a relegation battle.
