Madejski Stadium development still planned

SkyBet Championship club Reading still plan to increase the capacity of the Madejski Stadium according to Get Reading.

The Royals have received planning permission to increase the capacity of the 24,200 arena to up to 38,000 and the club have re-confirmed their commitment to the stadium’s growth.

The expansion is hinged upon the Berkshire club successfully regaining their place in the Premier League and construction will not commence whilst they are a SkyBet Championship club.

The re-development would see approximately 7,000 additional seats added to the East Stand while the North and South Stands would each be increased by around 3,500 seats. Last season, Reading’s home attendance in the SkyBet Championship averaged just 17,285, a slight increase on the figure of 17,022 recorded in the 2014/2015 campaign. So far this season, the club’s biggest gate was just 16,781 when The Royals drew 2-2 with Brighton & Hove Albion back in August.

The area around the Madejski Stadium is set for regeneration with 630 new homes and a new 250-bed hotel set to be built while a conference centre, ice rink and cafes and restaurants will also feature in the development named the Royal Elm Park development.

With those plans to be discussed by the Reading Borough Council in November, Reading Football Club have assured fans that there are plans to increase the capacity of the Madejski Stadium if required.
