Steve McClaren a wanted man……by his former club

The Sun understands that Queens Park Rangers owner Tony Fernandes wants to bring former coach Steve McClaren back to Loftus Road to work in a ‘senior position’ alongside manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. McClaren previously served under Harry Redknapp on the coaching staff at the club in 2013.

The 55-year-old former England manager is looking to rebuild his career after struggling to find a job as a football manager since leaving Newcastle United towards the end of last season. He has since gone to university to take on a course, with the hope of him moving into potentially being a chairman of a football club one day.

However he insists he still has something to offer on the coaching scene and working alongside Hasselbaink wouldn’t necessarily be an issue. McClaren was Hasselbaink’s manager when the pair were at Middlesbrough and their relationship is said to be very healthy. The former FC Twente and Vfl Wolfsburg boss however insists he would only return to the Sky Bet Championship club if Hasselbaink approved it.

Should the move go ahead, not only would it lead to outright questions on Hasselbaink’s future, but that of Les Ferdinand too. QPR have lost their last three games, including a 6-0 home defeat to Newcastle United. Ferdinand, a former Hoops striker, is director of football at the club but McClaren joining the club in a similar type of role would lead to talk about is there a need for both individuals at the club.

McClaren believes he can help transform QPR’s current poor run of form and get them challenging towards the right end of the table. He has experience of this league during his time managing both Derby County and Nottingham Forest. It remains to be seen what the future holds for Hasselbaink, Ferdinand and McClaren.
