Micky Mellon will rally players after disappointing defeat

Shrewsbury Town head coach Micky Mellon has told the Shropshire Star that he will aim to rally his players after suffering another disappointing defeat.

The Shrews haven’t had the best start to the season and that continued when they fell to Scunthorpe United in a 1-0 defeat this weekend thanks to a goal from David Mirfin which actually moved the Iron to the top of Sky Bet League One.

However after that game Shrewsbury headed towards the other end of the table and are now in the relegation zone after dropping into 22nd place. It was hoped before the season begun that the Shropshire based team wouldn’t get involved in another relegation battle but the early season form has shown that they could be heading that way again.

But Mellon wants to make sure that doesn’t happen again and he is aiming to rally his players so they can boost their form for the coming weeks and drag themselves out of the relegation zone.

He said: “We’re gutted, we’re absolutely gutted and on the floor,”

“It’s absolutely our job to make sure we don’t de-motivate them, it’s our job to keep them where they are. Motivation is from within, we’ve got to make sure we keep going and are optimistic and keep knowing that it is about fine margins.

“We know the areas we have to improve.”

“We’ve got to be better between the lines,”

“We’ve got to be better when we make the changes and see more of why we make the changes.”

Shrewsbury will get their best chance to turn things around next weekend when they travel to face AFC Wimbledon.
