Russell Slade battered team following Fleetwood Town draw

Charlton Athletic’s Josh Magennis has revealed to London News Online that their head coach Russell Slade gave the team both barrels following their 2-2 draw with Fleetwood Town.

On a personal note, the game was a good one for Magennis as he was able to score his first goal for the club which served as an equaliser for Chris Long’s opener. Fleetwood would go on to retake the lead through David Ball before a late equaliser from Lee Novak rescued a point for the Addicks.

With Charlton hoping to push for promotion this season, the draw was a massive disappointment as it pushed them down to 13th spot. And while plenty of fans were grumbling after only being able to get a point against Fleetwood, Slade certainly wasn’t happy with it. According to Magennis, he let out all of his frustrations at the team following the end of the match and that the team are now eager to improve to make sure that never happens again.

He said: “It was good to get off the mark and on the plus side we didn’t get beat. But the manager made clear that the performance wasn’t acceptable for what we can accept ourselves as a team.”

“We got a bit of a stern telling off, if you can say it politely. We’ve set standards at the start of the season and it’s imperative we continue that.”

“It was nice to score but most importantly the team has got to be winning. If we can’t then the next thing is not to lose.”

“I wouldn’t say he is a difficult man to please. His standards are very high and he just wants the best for us at all times. He knows we’ve got enough to play at our maximum every week.”

“We prove it nearly every day in training. If he feels he isn’t getting it then he is going to let us know. On Saturday it was not just individuals – it was the whole team.”

“We’ve got to take it on the chin. He’s our gaffer and we respect what he says. He gives us belief and when he says it is not good enough then it is not good enough.”

“It’s up to us to react and that’s what we’ve got to do against Wimbledon on Saturday.”
