Oxford United: Head coach says the best is still to come

Speaking to the Oxford Mail, Oxford United head coach Michael Appleton says that his side can and will play much better, despite recording three victories in their last four games. The former Portsmouth boss is adamant that the U’s are yet to hit full stride and there could be exciting times ahead at the Kassam Stadium.

Their most victory came on Saturday at home to local rivals Swindon Town, sealing a 2-0 win in front of a sell-out crowd (highlights can be seen in the video at the bottom of this page). Their next test comes this weekend away to Karl Robinson’s MK Dons and Appleton says that his side has only really shown glimpses of what they are capable of.

The club are still on a big high after achieving promotion out of League Two last season. Six games into the new campaign and they are situated in the top half of the League One table, sitting above the likes of Sheffield United and Charlton Athletic. Nevertheless, Appleton believes performances could easily improve in the coming weeks and months,

“I think we’ve shown massive glimpses of it, but I still think there’s a lot more to come.

“There’s no doubt about it, we’re getting there. I’m starting to see things I want to see.

“I still don’t believe until we get to the 15-20-game mark, we’ll have a real rhythm about the team.

“But I thought the performance against Swindon was very good.”

Appleton’s men will already be backed by a travelling contingent of over 2,500 supporters at stadiummk this weekend.
