Championship boss says impressive start is ‘irrelevant’

Despite their strong start to the season, Barnsley manager Paul Heckingbottom says it is ‘irrelevant’ that the Tykes are third after collecting 12 points from their opening six games. He told the Sheffield Star he is only concerned about where they end the league season.

The Tykes are clearly still on a big high after winning the League One Play-Off Final against Millwall at Wembley in May. Since then, Heckingbottom was appointed on a permanent basis and they have started life in the English second tier in blistering fashion.

Not only have their won four of their first six, but they are currently the highest scorers in the division and recorded their first away victory of the season over the weekend at Preston North End. Although he is pleased by their start, Heckingbottom insists he isn’t getting carried away,

“Everyone’s going on about our league position but it’s absolutely irrelevant to me. It’s where we finish at the end of the season that’s important.

“The pleasing thing for me is four wins from our opening six games and the fact that we’ve scored goals. I know we’re capable of runs like that and we may have runs the other way but we all know that we can turn it around if we do.”

Tonight, Barnsley look to continue their superb start to life back at this level when they travel to Walter Zenga’s Wolverhampton Wanderers.
