Whole Game Solution “catastrophic” for Pompey

Portsmouth chief executive Mark Catlin has blasted the EFL plans to make changes to the Football League, deeming them potentially “catastrophic” for the club.

Speaking to Portsmouth’s local paper, The News, Catlin was deeply concerned about the potential reduction of fixtures. Whole Game Solution plans would see home games reduced by four by 2019, which could cost the South Coast club hundreds of thousands of lost revenue. Catlin went on to say that we may never see clubs like Burton Albion or Rotherham United make it to the Sky Bet Championship in future, with the chief executive describing plans as “elitist”.

The EFL’s solution is to implement a four division system below the Premier League, including a League Three. In each league, there would be 20 teams each, meaning the loss of eight games a season for Football League clubs. As well as the total restructuring of the league, relegation from the EFL would be impossible as of 2019/20 under new plans. Is it fair that those outside the EFL may never be able to realize their Football League dreams?

Other plans being spoken about include the regionalisation of the bottom two leagues, much like the Vanarama North and South. As well as this ideas to move FA Cup 1st and 2nd Round fixtures to midweek have also been spoken about.  The major debate concerns where the 12 teams completing the potential new EFL structure would come from. Will the EFL look to introduce B-Teams, or look to bring in the highest finishing non-league teams? With the vote set to take place in just under a year’s time, it remains to be seen which way the 72 will vote.
