Ipswich failed to sign attacking duo on Deadline Day

The East Anglian Daily Times reports that Championship side Ipswich Town saw move for Queens Park Rangers striker Conor Washington and Portsmouth winger Kyle Bennett rejected on Deadline Day. Tractor Boys boss Mick McCarthy had hoped to sign up the duo prior to the 11pm deadline.

After losing Daryl Murphy to Newcastle United, Ipswich were desperately keen on adding another striker to their squad. It is understood that they made moves for four strikers on Deadline Day to try and fill the void left by the Republic of Ireland international. Barnsley forward Marley Watkins was also the subject of a failed £1million bid.

With QPR strengthening their squad with Anderlecht striker Idrissa Sylla, McCarthy felt that there was therefore a potential opportunity to prize Washington away from Loftus Road. The Northern Ireland international has made five appearances this season, mainly as a sub, scoring once in the EFL Cup win over Swindon Town. However both clubs were unable to agree a fee.

Regarding Bennett at Portsmouth, Ipswich were keen on making him their second signnig of the summer from Fratton Park after Adam Webster joined over the summer. Webster has since become one of McCarthy’s first names on the teamsheet. Bennett, along with Webster, impressed for Pompey during their FA Cup win over Ipswich last season. His contract expires at the end of the season but Paul Cook was not willing to let him leave without being able to sign a replacement.
