Peterborough United and Swindon Town in Sky stalemate

It was honours even yesterday, as Peterborough United and Swindon Town played out a 2-2 draw at the ABAX Stadium.

The game was shown live on Sky Sports, and neutrals certainly weren’t left disappointed, with four goals, and an array of attacking football on show.

The first half was controlled by the visitors, but they failed to create any clear cut opportunities early on.

The first shot on target came Swindon’s way, with John Goddard curling a shot from distance straight into the arms of Mark Tyler, who was appearing in a professional game for the 800th time.

The first talking point of the game came after 36 minutes, when a Michael Doughty challenge on Marcus Maddison was penalised with the award of a Posh free kick.

The challenge seemed fair enough, and despite protests from Swindon players, Maddison’s curling free kick was met by Gwion Edwards, who nodded home to give Posh a 1-0 lead.

Swindon’s best chance of the half came just before the interval, with the impressive John Goddard skipping past the challenge of Michael Bostwick and firing just wide of Mark Tyler’s far post.

HALF TIME: Peterborough United 1-0 Swindon Town

Both teams were straight out of the blocks in the second half, and Paul Taylor saw a shot blocked on the goal line by Nathan Thompson just minutes after the restart.

A couple of minutes later it was 1-1. Referee Tim Robinson awarded a penalty to the visitors, much to the disgust of the home faithful.

Michael Bostwick was judged to have handled a fierce shot from Swindon Town playmaker Michael Doughty, but TV replays suggest the centre half couldn’t have done much about it.

Swindon didn’t care, and felt that justice had been served following the dubious award of the free kick that led to Peterborough’s opening goal.

Doughty stepped up, and slotted his penalty into the bottom corner to level up the scores.

The game became open, and both sides were playing some good attacking football.

Another penalty was awarded after 63 minutes, this time to the home side.

Posh captain Chris Forrester was fouled by Swindon debutant Sean Murray, and the ref had no choice but to point to the spot.

Posh’s man of the moment Marcus Maddison stepped up, and casually slotted his penalty away to put Posh back in front.

It seemed everytime Posh took the lead they seemed nervous, and Swindon began to grow into the game.

13 minutes later they were level. A Michael Doughty cross was deflected into the back of his own net by the unfortunate Jack Baldwin.

The goal came after 76 minutes, and both sides began to push on looking for a winner.

There were chances at either end. Jermaine Anderson saw his low drive tipped around the post after 83 minutes.

With just seconds remaining on the clock, substitute Luke Norris could have won it for the visitors, but his shot narrowly missed the far post.
