Wigan Athletic have third bid for Hearts defender rejected

Wigan Athletic have had a third bid for Hearts’ Callum Paterson rejected according to a report from the Edinburgh Evening News.

The Latics have had Paterson as a long-term target and had already made two bids for the left back but both have been turned down. It had been hoped that their third bid would finally be the one which would be accepted but it hasn’t matched the £1m valuation that Hearts have put on the player, meaning he will be staying at Tynecastle for the time being. It is currently unknown whether Wigan will return with another bid, but they are unlikely to drop him as a target.

It is expected that Hearts will eventually sell Paterson as he only has one year left on his contract and could end up leaving on a free transfer next summer. The Edinburgh based club wouldn’t be left completely out-of-pocket as they would get £350K-£400K in tribunal fees due to Paterson being aged under 24-years-old, but it would be less than the £1m they are wanting for him today. They would also not be able to put add-on fees onto the deal which may end up being lucrative if Paterson continues his development at Wigan as expected.

The Latics have been incredibly busy since they were promoted from Sky Bet League One and have already signed a stunning 11 players. The players who have already joined are Dan Burn, Jake Buxton, Jordi Gomez, Nick Powell, Stephen Warnock, Alex Gilbey, Adam Bogdan, Luke Garbutt, Kyle Knoyle, Shaun MacDonald and Reece Burke.
