Derby: Rams said to be heading raid for Chesterfield’s ex Leeds starlet

Radio Yorkshire journalist, and Chesterfield match commentator, Joe Rawson says on Twitter that Derby County are ahead in the race to sign Gboly Ariyibi from Chesterfield.

Derby are competing with Londoners Brentford for the former Leeds starlet’s signature but Rawson says (tweet – below) that it is Derby who are in the driving seat to move Ariyibi the 29 miles or so from the Proact to the iPro.

As he states in his tweet, the stumbling block for any move seems to be the fact that Derby are not close to meeting the valuation that Chesterfield have placed on Ariyibi as one that they are happy with to sanction a move.

Ariyibi came to Chesterfield at the end of August 2014, after being cut adrift by Leeds United at the end of May the same year. He was given his first big break in football by Leeds United, taking the youngster on from Southampton who released him in 2013. Leeds United took a chance and signed the youngster on December 12 2013, Ariyibi seen by some as a definite capture that would enhance the Leeds United Academy squad.

The breakthrough at Leeds United never came, with the youngster only playing twice for the Whites, games against Blackburn and Nottingham Forest gaining him only 73 minutes of action. A further two games on loan at Tranmere saw him gather 64 minutes of game time before the Whites cut him loose, releasing him at the end of May 2014 in the move that led to his arrival at Chesterfield.

Since arriving at the Proact the youngster has notched up 64 appearances for Chesterfield across all competitions, scoring four goals and providing 11 assists. However, it is his sparkling form over last season’s 2015/16 Sky Bet League One campaign that has caught the eye somewhat, likely the reason behind the Brentford and Derby interest.

When asked on Twitter what he thought would be a successful bid for Ariyibi, Rawson replied that “anything towards £750,000” would likely swing the deal as “he’s in the final year of his contract,” having only scored twice in the 43 league matches that he has played.
