Wigan close to securing deal for Wolves winger

Wigan Athletic are set to land the signature of long-term winger target Nathan Byrne, according to the Daily Mail.

Latics boss Gary Caldwell has been desperate to bolster his side’s attacking depth prior to the summer transfer window slamming shut, and now looks set to secure one of his top identified targets.

Upon the sweeping financial takeover by Chinese multi-national conglomerate Fosun International and the implementation of new boss Walter Zenga, Byrne has been entirely frozen out of the Wolves squad, failing to make a single appearance for Wanderers this campaign.

Following multiple high-profile signings by Zenga, Wolves look set to give the green light for Byrne to depart Molineux in favour of a switch to the DW Stadium and Wigan.

The 24-year-old Englishman began his professional career with Tottenham Hotspur in 2010, however made his senior debut whilst on loan with then League One outfit Brentford in 2011. Brief and relatively uneventful loan spells with Bournemouth, Crawley and Swindon ultimately saw Byrne fail to make a single first team appearance in three years at White Hart Lane.

However, a summer 2013 switch to Swindon Town elevated Byrne to national prominence, with the youngster becoming an integral feature of The Robins’ two consecutive surges to a playoff position in 2014 and 2015. Soon after bagging an opening day hat-trick against Bradford last season, Byrne completed a high-profile £1 million switch to Wolves on September 1 2015.

Acquiring Byrne’s services provides a significant boost to Wigan’s attacking options, as the newly-promoted Latics look to build on their dominant run to the League One title last campaign.
