Sheffield United set to sign rival striker after agreeing fee

Sheffield United are close to signing Caolan Lavery from their fierce Steel City rivals Sheffield Wednesday after agreeing a fee for him according to a report from the Yorkshire Post.

While there have been a few players who’ve played for both United and Wednesday, including the Blades current forward Leon Clarke, not many have made the direct move from one side to the other, with Terry Curran and Alan Quinn being the most notable. But Lavery may now become the 30th player to play for both the Blades and the Owls.

Lavery had been released by Sheffield Wednesday at the end of last season but because he was aged under 24-years-old and the Owls did offer him a new deal, the club are owed compensation. But now the two clubs have agreed on a fee and Lavery should complete his move to the other side of the city before the end of the transfer window.

The 23-year-old striker, who has played for both Canada and Northern Ireland’s youth national sides, started his career in Canada playing for the Red Deer Renegades before moving to Northern Ireland to play for Goodyear FC. He was then picked up by Ipswich Town but was released in 2011 when he was picked up by Sheffield Wednesday. He had periods of being in the first team but was pushed down the pecking order when the club invested in their squad following the takeover of Dejphon Chansiri. During his time at Wednesday, he was loaned out to clubs such as Plymouth Argyle, Chesterfield and Portsmouth.
