Newcastle United: Atsu to make it a dozen at St James’ Park

According to Sky Sports, Chelsea’s right-wing Christian Atsu is set to make it 12 in at St James’ Park when he arrives on a season-long loan deal later today.

24-year-old Atsu, who arrived at Chelsea from Portuguese side FC Porto on August 31, 2013 for a fee believed to be £3.5m is is 44-cap, nine-goal Ghana international who will bring pace and attacking resolve to the flanks when brought in to the Newcastle side.

Not being able to break into a star-studded Chelsea first-team set up, Atsu’s career at the club has been punctuated by a series of loan deals to various clubs: Vittese Arnhem, Bournemouth, Everton and Malaga being his destinations.

Newcastle look set to be his fourth loan destination as they attempt to climb out of the Sky Bet Championship and back to the Premier League at the first time of asking after their relegation last season.

The loan deal is also thought not to be the only format of deal that is being spoken about between the two teams as Newcastle try to bring Atsu to the north-east and St James’ Park. Sky Sports, quoting ‘Sky sources’, claim that “it is understood an option to buy the 24-year-old Ghana international outright is also under discussion between the clubs.”
