Derby County complete deal for another striker

Derby County have signed another striker after Matej Vydra completed his move from Watford for an undisclosed fee as confirmed by the club website.

The Rams made their first signing of the summer last week when Manchester United’s James Wilson moved on loan to the club. And now Derby have got another striker after Vydra signed a four-year contract with the club following his move from Watford.

Since Watford were promoted to the Premier League, a team which Vydra was part of, the striker has slowly been frozen out of the first team after the partnership between Odion Ighalo and Troy Deeney reaped rewards in the top-tier. He had a mixed spell with Reading when he moved on loan to the Royals last season but now he has permanent left Watford after joining Derby for an undisclosed fee.

The 24-year-old striker made his breakthrough at Italian club Udinese but barely made an appearance for them or another club he went on loan to FC Bruges before moving on loan to Watford after the Pozzo family took them over. His success in that spell saw him move up to the Premier League with his next move when he joined West Bromwich Albion though most of his appearances there was as a substitute. After another loan spell with Watford, he joined the Hornets permanently in 2015 but only spent a year there before leaving to join Derby.

After Derby completed the signing of Vydra, their head coach Nigel Pearson said: “We’re really pleased to signMatěj Vydra – we hope that he will bring goals and energy to the team.”

“His ability to exploit space with his pace is good and something that we need, while his goals record is pretty healthy as well.”

“I hope that another fresh face will provide a lift to the dressing room. Without wanting to pile any pressure on him, coming into a new challenge here at Derby County, we hope that he can be the catalyst for us to start bringing some more positive results, which are obviously something that we need.”

“We’ve brought James Wilson in as well from Manchester United recently and we hope that the two of them will give us different options up front and help us, as a team, to win more games.”
