West Ham defender requests to join Wigan Athletic

West Ham United’s Reece Burke has asked his team to let him go on loan to Wigan Athletic according to a report from The Sun.

It’s been clear that the 19-year-old defender would be once again loaned out after he had a successful spell with Bradford City last season with destination likely being a Sky Bet Championship team with Blackburn Rovers and Barnsley reportedly interested.

But it looks like that Burke will be heading to the DW Stadium as the defender requested to the coaching staff at West Ham that they allow him to move there. However it’s not because Burke is a fan of the Latics but that one of his best friends and youth team-mate Kyle Knoyle has already been loaned out to Wigan and he hopes to join up with them and reform that partnership in defence.

Burke is highly rated by the West Ham coaching staff and made his debut back in 2014, though it was one to forget after they were battered 5-0 by Nottingham Forest. He continued to make the odd appearance for the Hammers, most notably in the Europa League, before he was loaned out to Bradford City. While there he made 36 appearances for the Bantams and scored two goals.

When completed, Burke would be the 11th player that Wigan have signed this summer following their promotion from Sky Bet League One. Already signed this summer are Stephen Warnock, Dan Burn, Jordi Gomez, Nick Powell, Luke Garbutt, Kyle Knoyle, Shaun MacDonald, Alex Gilbey, Jake Buxton and Adam Bogdan.
