Leeds United: striker said to have big part to play at club

Senegalese striker Souleymane Doukara arrived at Elland Road on a season-long loan from Italian side Catania during the 2014 summer transfer window, the club quickly moving to turn this into a permanent deal early in the 2014/15 season.

Arriving at Elland Road on a reported £1.6m deal, the powerfully-built French-born Senegalese forward is entering his third season as a White. In his previous two seasons at Elland Road, admittedly he has only played a supporting role at Elland Road with his two Championship seasons amounting to 49 appearances and 2,745 minutes of game time – 33% of available game time.

During his time on the pitch, the player the fans refer to as ‘Douks’ has scored eight Championship goals as well as providing five assists with four further goals coming in cup games – two each in the FA Cup and EFL Cup.

Fans see Doukara’s promise and power but many remain to be convinced that he is a player that can contribute fully to the Leeds United cause. However, this is not a view shared by the current management structure at the club, as evidence by head coach Garry Monk in his press conference this morning.

Speaking on this subject, and reported by Joe Rawson on Twitter, Garry Monk stressed the part that Doukara has to play saying: “Sol Doukara still has a future at Elland Road and has big potential.”

Doukara has only featured once in the 2016/17 Championship campaign, coming on as a substitute and playing the last 21 minutes of Leeds’ impressive 2-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday just gone.
