Barnsley: big cash bonanza after Stones sale

Moments ago, BBC Sport announced that Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City have snapped up Everton defender John Stones for £47.5m. It is a move that will have Barnsley fans rubbing their hands with glee.

John Stones is a 10-cap England international who had been on duty with his country at the Euro 2016 championship. Whilst he was not used by the Three Lions in the tournament, one of only two outfield players not to see action, that does not mean that he was not a desired target, as Manchester City’s successful pursuit has shown.

Manchester City’s new boss Guardiola had identified Stones as his prime summer transfer target with many saying that to get his man Guardiola and City would have to pay the Goodison Park club around £50m.

Barnsley’s windfall comes about due to a 15% sell-on clause negotiated when Stones moved from Oakwell to Goodison for £2.6m at the end of January 2013. Aware of interest in Stones, and wary of his potential value to other teams, Everton unsuccessfully tried to buy out this clause in August last year.

Manchester City’s successful £47.5m bid for Stones mearns Barnsley stand to make around £7m from the deal, a tidy sum for the newly promoted Championship side to have in their coffers before the summer transfer window closes.
