Stoke City complete signing of Dons youngster

Premier League club Stoke City have completed the signing of youngster Ryan Sweeney from SkyBet League One club AFC Wimbledon according to Get West London.

The 19 year old Kingston-Upon-Thames born defender successfully completed a medical on Thursday and has signed a three year deal with The Potters. Stoke City have paid an undisclosed fee for the youngster although the  total transfer fee is believed to be in the region of £250,000 plus add ons.

Sweeney is a product of the AFC Wimbledon academy set up having been with The Dons since the age of eight. The player was handed his senior debut for the club at just 17 years of age when he was introduced as a late substitute in a 4-0 defeat at Dagenham & Redbridge in April 2015.

The defender has been attracting interest from Premier League clubs over the course of the summer with Tottenham Hotspur thought to be interested but it is Stoke City who have landed the promising youngster.

Sweeney has gone on to make 13 appearances for AFC Wimbledon with 10 of those coming in last season’s promotion campaign. The player is yet to score his first professional goal.

The Republic of Ireland Under 18s international is likely to initially feature for Stoke City’s development squad while the club could also consider loaning the player out to gain further first team experience.
