Birmingham boss names his four ideal transfer targets

Birmingham City manager Gary Rowett has named his four ideal Championship transfer targets, according to The Birmingham Mail.

Rowett said: “You could write a list as long as your arm of players that you’d want at this level: (Patrick) Bamford, (James) Wilson, (Ross) McCormack, (Alex) Pritchard and every club in the Championship would be queueing up to get those types of player.”

Ross McCormack and Alex Pritchard have already been signed by Championship rivals this week, with Birmingham not linked with either player.  McCormack made the move from Fulham to Aston Villa for a fee of £12 million, with Pritchard signing for Norwich City.

Patrick Bamford and James Wilson are still up for grabs however, with both players also understood to be available for loan from their parent clubs.  With Birmingham understood to be on a tight budget this summer, a loan deal for either of these players could be perfect for the club.

Bamford is with Chelsea at the moment but will most likely leave the club before the transfer window closes.  The striker had two loan spells last season, both with Premier League sides.  Bamford struggled however, and failed to score a goal for either Crystal Palace or Norwich City.

This was no comparison to his spell with Middlesbrough in the Championship the season before, where Bamford scored 17 goals in 38 league games.  A proven Championship goalscorer, Bamford would be a fantastic addition to any squad in the league.

James Wilson is also likely to be loaned out by Manchester United this summer.  The striker has less Championship experience but did spend most of last season on loan at Brighton.  Wilson scored five goals in 25 Championship games.

Rowett added about the players: “There is a market for that and they’re not easy to get, but they are the type of players that make any team in the Championship better. And of course, everyone is probably after the same types.”
