Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday – season preview

Following heartbreak in the Play-Off Final at the hands of Hull City, Sheffield Wednesday will be looking to come back strongly this season.

There will certainly be more pressure on the Owls, but can Carlos Carvalhal and co handle the added expectations?

Key signings:

The addition of former Sunderland striker Steven Fletcher was welcomed by Sheffield Wednesday fans. Fletcher is a proven goal scorer, who has plenty of Premier League experience. If the supply is there, he could easily be towards the top of the goal scoring charts. Attacking midfielder Almen Abdi has also joined the club. He knows what it takes to earn promotion from the Championship, after winning the league with Watford in 2015. He’s also got plenty of Premier League experience, having appeared 32 times for the Hornets last season.

Key players:

It’s hard to look past Fernando Forestieri as the main man for Sheffield Wednesday. He scores goals, he creates goals, and is more than capable of making yards with the ball at his feet. He’ll be a difficult customer for any Championship defender. The aforementioned Steven Fletcher could also be key. If Forestieri and Fletcher can form a partnership, Sheffield Wednesday will be feared by all Championship clubs.

Prediction:

Sheffield Wednesday were one of the standout teams in the Championship last season. They’ll be hoping to emulate their form from last season and mount another promotion push. The squad is a tight unit, and hopes will be high amongst the players ahead of the new season. Despite the increase in quality of teams in the Championship this year, I expect Sheffield Wednesday to be up towards the top again. A Play-Off place will be the minimum, and they could potentially push for automatic promotion.
