Olsson will stay as West Ham set to sign ex-Newcastle defender

Norwich City defender Martin Olsson will not be moving to Premier League side West Ham United this summer, according to the Daily Mail.

West Ham bid £3 million for Olsson earlier in the transfer window, and were reportedly set to follow this up with another bid of £4 million.  However Olsson now looks set to stay with Norwich for the upcoming season after West Ham turned their attention to Inter Milan full back Davide Santon.

It is understood that Santon has flown to London for further talks and a medical with West Ham ahead of a loan deal from Italy.  The Hammers will also have the option to buy Santon from Milan for a fee of £5 million next summer.

West Ham are in the hunt for a left back following an injury to their first choice Aaron Cresswell.  The injury is expected to keep Cresswell out for around four months, meaning that his club need to sign some cover until the defender returns.

Initially bidding for Norwich’s Martin Olsson, West Ham have now pulled out of the running due to the Championship side’s valuation of their Swedish full back.  West Ham will not want to break the bank for a defender who is unlikely to get much game time when Cresswell returns around Christmas.

West Ham also had a loan move turned down for Arsenal defender Kieran Gibbs, but now look to have found their man in former Newcastle defender Davide Santon.  Santon made 94 appearances during his time at Newcastle, and was a big hit with the fans.

Norwich will be pleased that they are set to keep hold of Olsson, who signing for the club from Blackburn Rovers in 2013.
