Newcastle United: Mo Diamé signs up – an insight

It’s already been done to death, but, in case you didn’t know, Hull City midfielder Mohamed Diamé has dropped down from the Premier League with Hull City and signed on as a Newcastle United player.

Diamé, who had been at Hull City since signing for the Tigers from West Ham at the start of September 2014, signed as a direct result of Newcastle invoking the £4.5m release clause in his contract, according to SkySports, with a medical and subsequent signing taking place and concluding earlier today.

Diamé’s journey to Tyneside comes via RC Lens B, where he started his professional career before a free transfer to Spanish third-tier side CD Linares. A move a year later to then La Liga 2 side Rayo Vallecano saw him jump up a tier in Spanish football before a £2.5m transfer and first foray into English football with Wigan Athletic on Aug 22 2009, the Latics then being in the Premier League.

The 2009/10 Championship season was obviously the one where the Magpies ripped the division apart scoring 90 goals and gaining 102 points and winning the title by an 11 point margin. Diamé has played against Newcastle in the Premier League for both Wigan and West Ham, who he joined on a free transfer for the start of the 2012/13 Premier League season.

Only as good as your last season…and Diamé’s last one was good.

Diamé’s headline figures from last season, the 2015/16 Championship promotion season, with Hull City was a best-ever season for the player. Ten goals led the way as the powerful midfielder proved to be a highly effective scorer as well as provider, weighing in with four assists. He also had the following ‘per game’ returns in last season’s Championship:

  • Passes: 16.2 completed from 20.6 (78.6% accuracy)
  • Key Passes – leading to shots: 0.8 (6% of total completed passes)
  • Dribbles: 1.4 completed from 2.5 (56% success)
  • Possession Loss: 4.8 (2.3 unsuccessful touches/2.5 dispossessed)
  • Aerial Duels: 0.6 won from 2.1 (28.5% success)
  • Tackles: 1.3 successful from 2.3 (56.5% success)
  • Interceptions: 1.2
  • Clearances: 0.3
  • Blocks: 1.3 (0.1 shots/0.1 crosses/1.1 passes)
  • Total Defensive Actions: 4.1
