Moussa Sissoko

Newcastle: La Liga giants ready to make offer for Sissoko

Since his showing at the recent Euro 2016 Championships for France increased his stock, Newcastle United’s Moussa Sissoko has been a much-watched player. Now it appears that one suitor, Real Madrid, are ready to firm up their interest according to a report in the Shields Gazette.

Sissoko, who only returned to Championship side Newcastle yesterday after his Euro exploits, could very well soon be back on his travels according to the Shields Gazette’s Miles Starforth with the Santiago Bernabau his likely destination. According to Starforth, “Real Madrid are ready to firm up their interest in wantaway Newcastle United midfielder Moussa Sissoko,” a player the Magpies rate in the £35m category.

The 26-year-old France central midfielder, and 44-cap international, came to the North East and St James’ Park via a £2m move from French Ligue 1 side Toulouse, where he came up through the ranks after playing his youth football at Red Star FC (1999/2001) and Espérance Aulnaysienne (2001/03).

During his time at Toulouse, the powerful midfielder made 219 appearances, scoring 23 goals and laying on 15 assists for team-mates. This has continued since signing for the Magpies with Sissoko playing 170 games, scoring 13 goals and providing 27 assists.

Seen by many as a ‘wantaway’ player, Sissoko has all but confirmed this sentiment in answers to questions regarding his immediate plans and the £35m price tag. Responding to questions about his future, Sissoko told Le Figaro that: “My priority is to stay in England, although I am not against seeking a new challenge elsewhere.” On the matter of his price tag, the French midfielder simply told L’Equipe, as per SkySports, “Newcastle would ask for £35m? It could be 20. For me it changes nothing. The interested clubs will know how to find common ground. I hope that it will be as early as possible.”

Speaking of the next steps in the Sissoko saga, the Gazette’s Starforth says that the departure of the Frenchman for Tyneside to Madrid “could come sooner rather than later,” once dealings involing Mohamed Diame’s and Ciaran Clark’s transfers to St James’ Park are concluded. The Gazette, tipping a nod to “reports in Spain” say that two players from Real Madrid could be make-weights in the deal.
