Is this Peterborough United’s year?

Life as a Peterborough United fan isn’t easy. This season will be the fourth in a row that the club have played in League One following their relegation from the Championship in 2013.

However, there’s a sense of optimism around the club for the coming campaign. Club legend Grant McCann is at the helm, and many Posh fans really feel this could be their year.

Pre season seemed to be a success for the Posh, with victories over strong Leeds United and Brentford sides demonstrating the quality that they possess.

Last year, they had the players with the ability to mount a promotion push, yet it ended disastrously. So what’s to say this year will be any different?

The squad has certainly improved. Although many Posh fans were disappointed that the club lost players such as Erhun Oztumer and Gaby Zakuani, keeping hold of Marcus Maddison, Jon Taylor and Chris Forrester was massive.

On top of that, several new acquisitions has seen the depth of the squad improve greatly. Defensively, Ryan Tafazolli and Andrew Hughes have looked impressive in pre-season, and only today the club announced the signing of young full back Jerome Binnom-Williams.

Darragh MacAnthony stated that boss Grant McCann wanted two players for each position, in order to provide competition.

He’s certainly got that across the back four, and I think Peterborough fans can expect far more clean sheets this season.

The midfield is the area of the pitch that has got Posh fans extremely excited. It’s the strongest midfield I’ve seen at the club in as long as I remember, and I cannot wait to see how McCann lines up in his first competitive game in charge.

Newly appointed club captain Chris Forrester is going to obviously be first choice, but with young talent Leo Da Silva Lopes looking excellent throughout pre-season, there’s no saying what will happen.

Jermaine Anderson’s return from injury is like a brand new signing, and he will without doubt make a huge difference to the team.

Posh have added new midfielders to their squad as well. Brad Inman and Gwion Edwards have both joined the club. Edwards has looked sharp in pre-season and it should be exciting to see what he can bring to the team.

Unfortunately, Brad Inman broke his leg in training, and is expected to be out until November.

The final third is where Posh struggled the most last season after Conor Washington was sold to QPR.

The re-signing of Paul Taylor looks to have been a superb piece of business from Grant McCann, as the striker looks on fire already!

Shaquille Coulthirst has also looked brilliant in the pre-season friendlies, and even scored both the goals in the victory over Leeds United.

Marcus Maddison and Jon Taylor are both still with the club, and will be looking to improve on last season’s individual performances.

This squad certainly has potential this season. Grant McCann has a brilliant relationship with the players, the fans, and the chairman. There’s a sense of harmony at the club ahead of the trip to Rochdale on the opening day, and a sense of belief that this could be the year that Posh make the return to the Championship.
