Aston Villa given green light to sign Watford keeper

Aston Villa could finally be set to bring Watford goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon to Villa Park after the player was told that he is permitted to leave Watford according to The Mirror.

The 29 year old Romanian stopper has been linked with a move to Aston Villa over the last few weeks and it has been reported that Villa could now seal a deal for Pantilimon after the keeper was told that he could not be assured of regular first team football with Watford.

It is thought that Aston Villa could bring the player to Villa Park for as little as £2 million and Villa manager Roberto Di Matteo could spend the coming days trying to thrash out a deal with The Hornets so that the keeper can make the move before next Sunday’s season opener at Sheffield Wednesday.

After starting his career in his homeland with Politehnica Timisoara, Pantilimon joined Manchester City in summer 2011 on a season long loan deal which was made permanent at the end of the season. The Romanian spent three seasons at the Etihad Stadium providing back up for number one keeper Joe Hart. Pantilimon made 29 appearances for City prior to spells at Sunderland and Watford.

The keeper has made just four appearances for The Hornets since joining the club in January and the player is understood to be ready to leave Vicarage Road to seek regular first team football.
