Nottingham Forest midfielder retires from football

Nottingham Forest midfielder Andy Reid has confirmed his retirement from the game with immediate effect according to the Nottingham Post.

The 33 year old former Republic of Ireland international midfielder has decided to hang up his boots after being plagued by injury problems. Reid has failed to make a first team appearance for Nottingham Forest for the best part of two years and despite battling against a persistent groin problem for a long period of time, the midfielder has finally admitted defeat.

The Dublin born midfielder started his career in the academy set up at Nottingham Forest before going on to make 160 appearances during his first of two spells at The City Ground scoring 25 goals. Reid’s accurate range of passing, skill and a keen eye for goal earned the player a move to the Premier League where he played for Tottenham Hotspur before going on to have spells in the top flight with Charlton AthleticSunderland and Blackpool.

Following his release by The Seasiders back in summer 2011, Reid returned to Nottingham Forest and has added a further 130 appearances to his tally with The Reds scoring 17 goals. The midfielder has become a popular figure around The City Ground and many fans will be sad knowing that the player is unable to recover from his injury problems to feature for the club once again.

Reid helped out on the coaching side towards the end of last season following former manager Dougie Freedman’s sacking assisting interim boss Paul Williams and the Forest coaching staff.
