Aston Villa: keeper leaves and heads back to Premier League

After an almost eight-year stay at Villa Park, Brad Guzan has waved goodbye to the Holte End and signed for Middlesbrough, as per the Teesiders’ website.

31-year-old American Guzan signed for Villa from American side Chivas USA at the start of August 2008 for a fee reported to be around £850,000 and over the past eight years has become the #1 keeper at Villa Park.

In total the 31-year-old Evergreen Park-born stopper has featured in 171 games for the Villains (144 in the Premier League), conceding 275 goals and keeping 35 clean sheets. Over the years at Villa Park he has also featured in four Europa League qualifiers and five UEFA Cup ties.

Guzan becomes Middlesbrough’s eighth signing off the summer window and will go into competition against Boro’s other keepers in regular Dimi Konstantopoulos, Tomas Meijas and fellow-new signing Victor Valdes.

Guzan signs on at the Riverside on a two-year deal after being reportedly allowed to leave on a free transfer with Villa’s new manager Roberto di Matteo already having signed Italian keeper Pierluigi Gollini in this summer’s transfer window, the Italian being signed to become Villa’s #1 for their 2016/17 Championship campaign.

Here’s some of the saves that show the potential that Guzan takes to the North East.
