Italian full-back joins Leeds United first team

Italian full-back Gabriele Perico has joined the Leeds United first team on trial, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post’s Phil Hay.

The 32-year-old was a part of the Leeds United squad who trained at Elland Road today ahead of Saturday’s clash against Serie A side Atalanta.

Perico has previously played for Italian sides Cagliari and Cesena. The full-back was released by Cesena this summer.

The player boasts a wealth of experience playing in Italy’s Serie A, having made 99 appearances and contributing one assist. Perico has also featured in 111 games in Italy’s second tier, Serie B, scoring 13 goals and assisting another three.

Primarily operating as a right-back, Perico can also play in either the left or right side of central defence.

The Whites have already been active during this summer, signing goalkeeper Rob Green, defender Kyle Bartley, midfielder Matt Grimes and forwards Hadi Sacko, Kemar Roofe and Marcus Antonsson.

Leeds have also been linked with a move for Icelandic defender Haukur Heidar Hauksson, with the player confirming talks with the Championship side. It now appears that Leeds will be looking at Perico instead, with the right-back available on a free transfer.

The Championship club are also trying to secure the signatures of Conor Shaughnessy and Billy Whitehouse for the club’s under-21s side.

The West Yorkshire outfit have also sold midfielder Lewis Cook to Premier League side AFC Bournemouth for a reported £6 million fee.

Leeds travel to Queens Park Rangers for their season opener in the 2016/17 Sky Bet Championship.
