Championship club set to open Academy in India

Aston Villa are set to open an Academy in India after conducting talks with the country’s Minister of Sport.

This announcement follows discussions with the Minister of Sport, Vijay Goel, and the Minister of Education, Prakesh Javedekar.

The deal includes Villa becoming the country’s advisor on football as the sport continues to grow after being introduced into the national curriculum for Indian state schools. They are also hoping to link with a club playing in the Indian Football Super League.

Municipal Council will provide Villa land in New Delhi, where the academy will have 3G pitches, offices, changing rooms, gyms, classrooms and other amenities. As part of the deal, Villa will be obliged to train coaches in the state schools, as well as coach children from the age of five upwards.

The news was announced at a press conference today in the Taj Hotel, New Delhi, by Club Chairman Tony Xia.

Xia expressed the aim of finding talented players from India who could progress through the ranks at Villa and potentially end up playing on the hallowed turf at Villa Park.

“Aston Villa Football Club plans to expand globally and India is one of the countries where we not only want to have an Indian Super League club but also open football academies all over India.

“Aston Villa has one of the best football academies in the world and has fans all over the world and some of our famous supporters include David Cameron, Prince William and Tom Hanks.

“Using our network we also want to help promote the U17 FIFA World Cup being held in India next year and make it a big sports celebration.”
