Sky Bet Championship new boys Burton Albion have today completed the signings of Ryan Delaney, Lloyd Dyer and Lee Williamson. The trio had been on trial with Nigel Clough’s Brewers in pre-season and have all penned permanent deals.
Burton, many peoples tip to be relegated back to League, have handed out one-year contracts, with the exception of Delaney who has signed two-year deal with the option of a third. Clough has been desperately trying to bolster his squad to provide more options ahead of the opening day clash with Nottingham Forest.
Dyer is probably the headline signing as he won promotion out of this league three times with Burnley, West Brom and Leicester City. He has impressed at Watford as well, ending last season with Burnley, who won the Championship title. Clough suggests he will have a big role to play,
“He’s 33 years old and I think his experience will be vital for us this season. We are a little bit short in wide areas and Lloyd will provide that outlet especially if we are under the cosh. His pace is also going to be an asset.”
Jamaican international Williamson struggled for game time at Blackburn Rovers last season but remains in the Championship with a point to prove. He has played for the likes of Mansfield Town, Sheffield United and Watford in his career. The 34-year-old is a useful signing according to his new manager,
“’Lee is a vastly experienced midfielder in the Championship and is the second international who’s joined us in the last 10 days (following Jackson Irvine) – quite something for Burton Albion.
“Lloyd and Lee may be older players but it’s certainly not a case that they are past it. They are extremely fit lads.”
Delaney makes the move from Irish side Wexford Youths and signs a deal having impressed in pre-season. Clough believes his versatility is an asset and someone with a very bright future,
“He can play left back or left centre half. He’s only 19 and hasn’t yet played at a decent level but he does a lot of things naturally. He has not been in full-time training which means he’s been blowing a bit in the last 20 minutes of games but we think we can get him up to speed.”
