Reading linked with stunning move for Dutch legend

Reading have been linked with an astounding move for Dutch legend Rafael van der Vaart according to a report from Get Reading.

While the 33-year-old maestro still has a year left on his contract at current club Real Betis, he has been told by the management there that he is no longer wanted and they will try to sell him this summer.

And in what could be one of the most unlikely moves of the summer, Reading and van der Vaart have begun informal talks over a potential move to the Madejski. The Royals new manager Jaap Stam played with van der Vaart for the Dutch national team, with their best moments together being at Euro 2004 when they reached the semi finals before being beaten by hosts Portugal.

There are still some obstacles that could prevent this move from taking place. Van der Vaart is on very high wages with Betis and it remains to be seen if he would take a wage cut to move to Reading.

Van der Vaart does have some knowledge of English football having played for Tottenham Hotspur for two years earlier in the decade. He had a very successful spell there as he was able to help lead the club to the quarter finals of the Champions League.
