MATCH REPORT: Barnsley suffer heavy defeat at the hands of Everton

Barnsley suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat at the hands of Everton despite some bright moments.

There is plenty between these two sides after first having an incredibly entertaining game in the Capital One Cup last season with Everton eventually winning 5-3 after extra time. Two of Barnsley’s star academy graduates, Mason Holgate and John Stones, moving to Everton over the last few years.

Both sides had a bright side with them both trying to score. Early on Adam Hammill’s powerful shot was blocked by the legs of Brendan Galloway but Everton would then go to the other side of the pitch and score. After a foul by Hammill, Kevin Mirallas was able to curl the free kick over the wall and past Adam Davies for the opener.

Barnsley’s spirits weren’t dampened by conceding an early got and they almost got an instant equaliser when Sam Winnall was able to knock the ball down for Alfie Mawson volleyed the ball onto the post. Winnall almost got a goal himself when his header went just wide.

Both sides would then go on to enjoy good passages of play. Gerard Delofeu seemed to be having plenty of fun tormenting the Barnsley defence, firing off shots and putting in crosses that were a constant headache for the South Yorkshire side. At the other end, Marc Roberts almost equalised but Galloway was able to clear his header off the line.

In the second half though, Everton finally got their second goal of the game. Ross Barkley showed his class with a superb through ball and Delofeu finally got a reward for his good work by being able to slot the ball home in space.

Barnsley were still trying to force the issue and get goals, with George Moncur doing well to turn his defender and take a shot, though that was saved by Joel Robles. However Everton did get their third when the Toffees quick passing dazzled the Barnsley defence which eventually gave Barkley enough space to fire off a shot which went past a flailing Davies.

Despite this heavy defeat, Barnsley had enough bright spots to make the fans think they have enough quality to stay in the Championship.
