REVIEW: Wanderers made to work for victory over York City

League 1 club Bolton Wanderers were made to work hard to secure a 2-0 friendly victory over non league York City at Bootham Crescent.

Wanderers settled the better of the two sides and Mark Davies capitalised on some sloppy defending from Jack Higgins to give the visitors an early lead from close range.

Phil Parkinson’s side were close to doubling the lead a minute later but Zach Clough dragged a shot across goal.

The home side rarely threatened in a quiet first half with winger Aidan Connolly coming closest to scoring but he flashed a shot wide from the edge of the box.

The second half was more lively with the match referee handing out three bookings as both clubs gave their all in a match which was anything but friendly.

In the 50th minute, a stunning save from York City’s trialist goalkeeper denied Max Clayton from scoring with a diving header.

On the hour, the home side were handed a lifeline when Aidan Connolly was flattened by Trotters keeper Mark Howard inside the box. Scott Fenwick stepped up to take the resulting spot kick but Howard got down low to save the penalty and redeem himself.

York City pushed for an equaliser but both Yan Klukowski and Franklyn Clarke failed to hit the target with shots from outside the box while Max Clayton came close at the other end on two occasions.

Five minutes from time, Bolton Wanderers were awarded a penalty kick of their own when Matt Fry fouled Jamie Proctor and the Wanderers player picked himself up to slot away the penalty kick to secure a 2-0 victory for Wanderers.
