Newcastle agree fee for Blackburn defender

Championship side Newcastle United have agreed a £5.5 million fee with Blackburn Rovers for defender Grant Hanley, according to Sky Sports.

The 24-year-old has been a target for Newcastle for the duration of the summer, but now reports suggest that a fee has been agreed between the two clubs.

Hanley has been a regular for Rovers since breaking into the first-team in January 2010, and has gone onto make 201 appearances for the club. During these games, the centre-back has scored nine goals and assisted a further six.

The defender has plenty of Championship experience, with 152 of his 201 appearances for Blackburn coming in England’s second tier.

Newcastle United are currently lacking in the central defender department, with Chancel Mbemba, Jamaal Lascelles and Curtis Good being the only names available for Rafa Benitez.

Should Hanley join, he will add to Dwight Gayle, Matt Richie, Matz Sels, Isaac Hayden and Jesus Gamez in making the switch to Tyneside.

Blackburn have already seen 11 players for their 2015/16 season leave their squad. Despite the large number of players leaving, Hanley will be the first player to leave where Rovers will receive a fee in return.

Newcastle travel to Fulham for their first game of the season in the Sky Bet Championship, whilst Blackburn host Norwich City.
