Burton target loan deal for Leicester midfielder

Newly-promoted Burton Albion have set their sights on securing a return for former loanee midfielder Hamza Choudhury, according to the BBC.

The 18-year-old joined The Brewers on an initial one-month loan period on 27 February 2016, and made his first professional appearance as a substitute in a scoreless draw against Walsall on the same day.

After numerous impressive performances, Choudhury’s loan deal was extended until the end of the season by Brewers boss Nigel Clough. The Englishman proved to become an integral feature in the centre of midfield with the Staffordshire side, as Burton surged to an unlikely promotion from League One to the Championship. In total, Choudhury made 13 appearances without scoring a goal in his brief tenure with Burton, most notably receiving a red card in The Brewers’ 1-1 draw with Bury on 2 April.

However, upon the expiration of his loan deal at the end of the 2015/16 campaign, Choudhury departed the Pirelli Stadium to return to Premier League champions Leicester City, aiming to impress the Foxes’ staff enough to receive first team opportunities at the club.

Despite it appearing Choudhury’s time with Burton had come to a conclusion, Brewers boss Nigel Clough admitted whilst speaking with BBC Radio Derby that his side had probed Leicester in the hopes of securing a return to the Pirelli Stadium for Choudhury on loan.

“We’d love to get him back if we can, so that’s ongoing,” Clough commented.

“We have asked about Hamza coming back, he had contractual issues to sort out, but now he has got back from Austria training with Premier League champions.”

Acquiring Choudhury’s services would significantly bolster Burton’s midfield depth, whilst also boosting The Brewers’ chances of retaining their Championship status come the end of the season ahead.
