Grigg going nowhere says Wigan boss

Wigan Athletic boss Gary Caldwell has firmly stated star striker Will Grigg will remain with the club this summer, when speaking with the Wigan Evening Post.

Grigg joined Wigan in a £1 million switch from Brentford in July 2015, and wasted no time in demonstrating his scorching scoring form, bagging 28 goals in 43 appearances for The Latics during the 2015/16 League One campaign.

The Northern Ireland international’s scoring exploits last season ultimately swept the 25-year-old to worldwide fame, with the chant ‘Will Grigg’s On Fire’ sparking significant interest in the striker across the globe. Having been recently polled 25th in the UEFA Best Player in Europe Award shortlist, it is expected that a number of clubs will be eager to pen Grigg’s signature before the end of the summer transfer window.

However, Wigan boss Gary Caldwell has made it clear he is unwilling to relinquish any of his star players, including Grigg, as The Latics head into a crucial Championship campaign.

Speaking to the Wigan Evening Post, Caldwell commented on the status of his most prized players less than a month before the beginning of the 2016/17 season,

“I’m sure there will be interest in my players this summer, and I’m sure there may even be some bids as well,

“But none of them will be going anywhere, and we have no need to sell anyone.”

With names such as midfield maestro Max Power being linked with a move away from the club, Wigan fans can seemingly rest assured that such speculation won’t lead to key players departing the DW Stadium this summer.

When questioned on Grigg specifically, Caldwell confirmed the striking sensation will be with the club heading into the new season,

“He will 100 per cent still be with this football club come the end of the transfer window,

“Will was a massive part of what we did last season, and I believe he will score a lot of goals in the Championship.”

Grigg remaining at Wigan will significantly boost The Latics’ chances of making an impact upon their return to the Championship, as the Lancashire club hope to build on their dominant run to the League One title last campaign.
