Rotherham United

Experienced Huddersfield midfielder attracts Championship rival

The Huddersfield Examiner understands that Rotherham United are plotting a move for Huddersfield Town midfielder Dean Whitehead. Alan Stubbs is hoping to add a central midfield player to his squad before the Championship season starts.

The Millers have also been linked with a move for Brighton & Hove Albion’s Jake Forster-Caskey. The experienced Whitehead would be a handy option for the former Hibs head coach to call upon.

34-year-old Whitehead made the move to the Terriers a year ago after previously playing for Middlesbrough. He is now entering the final year of his contract at the John Smith’s Stadium. Since then, he started 32 matches for the club.

David Wagner has a plethora of options available to him in the midfield position. Ivan Paurevic and Aaron Mooy both joined the club this summer. Jonathan Hogg and Philip Billing are already on the books, in addition to Whitehead.

If Rotherham were to offer Whitehead a two-year contract then it would certainly provide him with good security at this stage of his career. He may find it hard to turn down. Plus with Wagner once again likely to rotate next season, Whitehead may still feel week-in-week out football is what he can provide. Whitehead began his career at Oxford United, also playing for Sunderland and Stoke City before joining Middlesbrough in 2013.
