League Two side swoop for former Oldham striker

Morecambe have completed the signing of former Oldham and York City striker Rhys Turner.

Turner exited Boundary Park at the end of the 2015/16 season following the expiration of the Englishman’s contract with The Latics, and has now finalised a deal that sees the 20-year-old make the switch to Jim Bentley’s Morecambe.

With only 15 players officially registered in the first team squad at the Globe Arena, Morecambe boss Bentley will have been eager to bolster The Shrimps’ overall depth.

Turner began his professional career at Stockport County in 2013, before truly igniting his career by vaulting from non-league to the third division, penning a deal with Oldham in 2014. However, the striker failed to make an impact at the Lancashire club making only 25 appearances in two-and-a-half seasons with The Latics.

Two loan stints during the 2015/16 campaign with York and Macclesfield yielded little success for Turner, ultimately resulting in the 20-year-old being released from Oldham.

A switch to Morecambe could provide Turner with the necessary opportunity to showcase his skill-set however, with boss Bentley confident the youngster can make an impact at the club,

“He’s young, bright and very eager to do well and progress,” Bentley told Morecambe’s official club website.

“We have had good reports about him from people we know in the game and we have seen enough in him to suggest he’s got a very bright future.

“He’s quick, powerful and full of energy and we are sure he will score goals for us.”

After a disappointing 15/16 campaign which saw Morecambe narrowly avoid relegation from the EFL, The Shrimps will be hoping to make shrewd signings that boost their chances of surging up the League Two table in the coming season.
