Derby favourites to sign ex-West Brom forward

Championship side Derby County are the bookies’ favourites to sign former West Bromwich Albion forward Victor Anichebe, according to the Derby Telegraph.

Championship rivals Birmingham City and Wolverhampton Wanderers also reportedly rival the Rams in the bookies’ market.

The 28-year-old was released by Premier League outfit West Brom following the conclusion of his contract this summer.

In 63 appearances for the club, Anichebe scored nine goals and assisted a further six. 14 of those appearances came in all competitions last season, but the Nigerian forward failed to find the net.

Previous to playing for the Baggies, Anichebe played for Everton between 2006 and 2013, making 131 appearances and scoring 18 goals.

In September 2013, he then made the move to West Brom for a fee of around £6m.

The striker also has international honours, featuring for Nigeria on 11 occasions, scoring one goal, his last game being the 3-1 defeat against Argentina in 2011.

Derby already have a vast amount of first-team strikers to choose from, with Chris Martin, Darren Bent, Johnny Russell, Abdoul Camara, Nick Blackman and Andreas Weimann all in the Rams’ squad.

Despite this, the bookies believe that Derby County could be the next destination for Anichebe, who has never featured in a Championship or Football League fixture.
