Newcastle eye move for England Under-21 Premier League star

According to The Sun (10th July, Page 64), Newcastle United are plotting a move for Southampton left back Matt Targett. The England Under-21 international has seen talks over a new contract at St Mary’s stall.

Although the 20-year-old still has three years left on his current deal, any hopes of agreeing an extension have been dashed. The Saints are now under new management after Ronald Koeman moved to Everton. Claude Puel must now decide if he is to cash in on the £5million-rated left back.

The Championship club have been particularly keen on the Eastleigh-born star since May. Targett was a part of the England Under-21 side which was victorious in the Toulon Tournament earlier this summer.

Rafa Benitez has been busy moulding his Magpies squad ahead of the new season. Jesus Gamez from Atletico Madrid was his latest signing. He could now tempt new Southampton manager Puel with a £5million offer for the youngster.

Targett has played a total of 20 matches for Southampton in all competitions, that includes the UEFA Europa League qualification stage.

If Southampton are open to a sale, then Newcastle are very much interested in signing the player up. He broke into the Southampton first-team scene over the last few seasons, perhaps a drop into the Championship to play more football could further aid his development.
