Retired ex-Leeds keeper eyes comeback with League 2 club

The Portsmouth News reports that retired goalkeeper Jamie Ashdown is to train with former club Portsmouth next week. The 35-year-old retired from the professional game a year ago. However he is now keen to pursue a comeback.

The goalkeeper remains in good physical shape and condition. He is now hoping to impress manager Paul Cook enough to offer him a contract. The League Two club have been on the lookout for an experienced shotstopper.

Pompey boss Paul Cook confirmed that Ashdown will train with the club, insisting he was recommended to them,

“Jamie is coming in to train with us, after being recommended.

“I am not against anyone coming in, the likes of Jamie coming in is no problem.

“It’s a case of “let’s have a look at you”.’

Ashdown left the club in 2012 after making 124 appearances. He then moved on to Leeds, Crawley Town and most recently Oxford United. The keeper began his career at Reading, where he made 16 first-team appearances.

His time at Pompey previously was a difficult one as he was given the task of challenging David James for the number one spot. He would soon win the number one jersey when Steve Cotterill was manager at Fratton Park. Ashdown remains popular in Portsmouth. He has a share in the Supporters’ Trust and continues to support their ventures.
