Sheff Utd close in on Championship defender signing

Get West London reports that Sheffield United are set to sign Brentford centre back Jack O’Connell. The 22-year-old is set to make the move to Bramall Lane for a ‘considerable fee’.

Since linking up with the Bees a year ago, the former Blackburn Rovers youngster has only played 19 times for the club. With Dean Smith signing John Egan from Gillingham this summer, he is even less likely to play more next season.

That alerted Chris Wilder who now looks set to snap up another centre back. Oldham defender James Wilson recently made the move to the League One promotion hopefuls.

O’Connell was given a three-year contract by then manager Mark Warburton at Griffin Park. He mainly acted as cover last season although he was given chances in the first-team whenever possible.

The Liverpool-born man does possess experience of League One football. He enjoyed a productive loan spell with Rochdale prior to joining Brentford on a permanent basis. The season before, he played a major role in helping Dale win promotion out of League Two.

Wilder is now slowly but surely stamping his own authority on the squad with new signings. He will undoubtedly target even more, whilst he is still keen to let a few more leave. O’Connell is set to become the latest capture of the Wilder era.
