Brentford midfielder in talks to drop down a league

Southend United manager Phil Brown has told the BBC that he is hoping to sign Brentford midfielder Alan McCormack. He revealed that he has entered discussions with the 32-year-old, but he is one of ‘about forty’ players he has spoken with.

Therefore, it is only preliminary discussions with McCormack at this stage. He triggered an instant one-year contract at the end of last season after playing a certain number of games. Despite this fact, there is every chance he could be dropping down into League One.

Over the summer, the ex-Swindon man has been completing his coaching badges. He hasn’t hid from the fact he is looking to nudge his way into that side of the game. Perhaps Brown has a role for him at Southend.

Of course, McCormack is no stranger to life at Roots Hall. A 2006 loan spell from Preston North End was made permanent the following season. He went on to play over 100 times for the Shrimpers.

Any transfer to take McCormack back to Southend appear well far off being close to a conclusion. Nevertheless, the fact he has past history with the club has to count for something as well. He played 29 times for the Bees last season, but did find himself in and out of the side. Injuries contributed to that as well.
